Death of Chazy councilor leaves seat vacant

CHAZY — The death of longtime Chazy public servant Donald “Bucket” Trombly has left an empty seat on the Town Council and grief among those who knew him.

“He was one of those guys who just loved his town and would do anything he could to help out,” Chazy Supervisor Staub Spiegel said.

Trombly died Monday at CVPH Medical Center in Plattsburgh. He was 76.

For much of the past five decades, Trombly has served the town in some capacity. He was the tax collector for six years and assessor for one year and spent several years as deputy supervisor.

He was involved in the Chazy Fire Department and Chazy Lions Club and was a founding member of the North Country Chamber of Commerce.

He helped organize the Senior Citizens Council of Chazy and served as chairman of Chazy Old Home Days for several years.

He was a past president of the Chazy Central Rural School Alumni Association and a past council member of Sacred Heart Church.

Trombly was also named Woodman of the World Citizen of the Year.

“He just did so much to help the town and everyone,” Spiegel said. “He was involved in everything, and he truly will be missed.”

Trombly’s Town Council seat was up for election this November.

At their meeting on Monday, Spiegel said, town officials will discuss what to do.

“I think we will probably leave it empty until the election and then fill it when someone gets elected.”
