Malone woman critically injured in Friday crash

CHATEAUGAY — A Malone woman was critically injured Friday when her vehicle crashed head-on into a liquid-manure spreader.

Marlene LeRoy, 38, who is a teacher at Flanders Elementary School in Malone, was traveling east on Brainardsville Road/County Route 24 and for some reason crossed into the westbound lane at about 8:15 a.m., Malone-based State Police said.

James Poirier, 62, of Bangor, who was driving the spreader owned by Bilow’s Farm, was unable to avoid LeRoy’s car, police said.

Both were taken to Alice Hyde Medical Center in Malone, where Poirier was treated then released and LeRoy was transferred to Fletcher Allen Medical Center in Burlington, Vt.

She was listed in critical condition at Fletcher Allen Friday evening.

“Our thoughts are with her as she recuperates, and we will see she gets what she needs,” Malone Central School District Superintendent Wayne Walbridge said.

Franklin County Fire Police closed the highway to traffic until 10:45 a.m.

Tickets were pending an investigation, police said.
