Man dies in ATV accident in Westport

WESTPORT — A Ballston Spa man died here when an all-terrain vehicle he was driving fell on him Monday night.

Tyler W. Middleton, 49, was riding a leased 2002 Polaris ATV alone on a logging road off Mountain Springs Road in the Town of Westport, according to a New York State Police press release.

The road provides access to the Nichols Pond Association.

Lewis-based State Police were called to investigate the crash at about 11:20 p.m.

Police said the ATV left the road, traveled down a small embankment and overturned, pinning Middleton beneath it.

He was found by some people with whom he was leasing the property where the accident happened, police said.

He was pronounced dead by Essex County Coroner Walter S. Marvin III.

An autopsy Tuesday at CVPH Medical Center in Plattsburgh determined the cause of death to be asphyxia due to the pressure on the chest, the release said.

Middleton’s death was ruled accidental.

Police did not know why the ATV left the road. The investigation was continuing; anyone with information about the accident is asked to contact State Police at 873-2771.
