Lyon Mountain Correctional to go up for auction

DANNEMORA — Early plans are in the works for the auction of Lyon Mountain Correctional Facility.

The state prison closed in January 2011, and the property’s future had been cloaked in uncertainty ever since.

Starting in 2006, the prison had begun a $2.6 million renovation project of some of its 20 buildings, which include dormitories and garages.

State officials previously estimated the 14-acre property, located in the Town of Dannemora hamlet of Lyon Mountain, had a $5 million assessment, making it a vital and valuable asset for the town, according to Town Supervisor Americo “Ves” Pivetta.

He discussed the possible auction of the facility at a recent Town Council session.

Lyon Mountain Correctional is listed as a surplus state property at nysstore.com, with “auction details coming soon.”

“We anticipate that it (auction) is likely to be some time this summer. However, a firm auction date has not been set,” said Heather Groll, spokeswoman for the New York State Office of General Services.

The property is not assessed, as it is an asset of the state, she said in a phone interview on Thursday.

The dates of open houses, the minimum bid, a brochure and video about the facility will be posted on that website as the effort move forward, she said.

A sign with updates will also be posted in the front of the building.
