Local ad makes 'Tonight Show'

PLATTSBURGH — An advertisement for 8-Ball Billiards Cafe was part of the Headlines segment of “The Tonight Show” on Sept. 9.

The ad, which ran in the Press-Republican on Aug. 16, promotes upcoming entertainment at the restaurant/bar. Below the address of 7202 Route 9 North, Plattsburgh is a line that reads “across from the shopping center that isn’t there yet.”

That refers to the former North Country Shopping Center property, where redevelopment unveiled in 2007 has yet to take place, except for Cumberland 12 cinemas.

8-Ball owner Jay Montpelier said Cindie Wade, a musician who performed with her Standing Room Only Band at his establishment on Aug. 31, sent the ad in to “The Tonight Show” studios in Burbank, Calif.

“I’ve sent three (ads) in myself. They never made it on the show,” he said.

Wade said she was talking with Montpelier after her performance, and he showed her the ad. She used to be his advertising representative when she worked at the Press-Republican and started kidding him about the last line.

On her way back, Wade got to thinking how odd it was, describing a location across from something that isn’t there. That was when she decided to send the ad in.

Wade knows Jimmy Fallon from when he used to bring his family to the Lobster Pot restaurant in Lake George while he was a “Saturday Night Live” cast member.

She emailed the ad to Fallon, who has been tapped to replace Jay Leno on the show, and also to Leno. And she sent a hard copy to the studio.

Wade said she was really surprised when the ad made it on the show.

“I told Jay, ‘Any exposure is good exposure,’” she said, adding his next ads should say: “As seen on ‘The Tonight Show.’”

Montpelier said he has seen the airplay with his ad only online.

“It’s funny; I usually watch it (the show) every night,” he said. “I missed that one.”

The clip is on “The Tonight Show” website in a Sept. 9 segment called Headlines Part 1 shortly after the 2-minute mark. Go to:
