Input sought on natural-foods co-op for Ti

TICONDEROGA — Organizers of a proposed natural foods co-operative for Ticonderoga want anyone who would use it to take a survey.

PRIDE of Ticonderoga is coordinating the effort, and PRIDE Executive Director Sharon Reynolds said they need responses from all those in southern Essex County who would buy from such an establishment.

“The volunteer committee for the proposed food co-op in Ticonderoga is requesting the community’s response to a survey that will give the committee more information on how the local residents feel about shopping at an alternative grocer, with the focus on locally, organically grown food,” she said by email.

The results to date will be discussed at the Co-Op Committee’s meeting set for 6 p.m. Monday, Sept. 16, at the fitness center next to the Ticonderoga Area Chamber of Commerce offices at 94 Montcalm St.

All are welcome.

“We’ll discuss the next steps for the co-op,” Reynolds said. “It is looking very good. I believe we’ll have a co-op.”

Members have been visiting food co-ops in other communities, she said, and will be reporting on how those are run.

‘VERY IMPORTANT’

The short survey includes questions asking respondents what percentage of their weekly groceries are fruit and vegetables, how often they buy organic and/or local foods and where they spend most of their grocery money.

It also asked what items would appeal, among them farm-fresh eggs, fresh-baked bread, local produce, grass-fed beef, bulk foods, craft beers, local wines, gluten-free and vegan foods, all-natural toiletries and organic condiments.

Reynolds said they’ve had about 200 responses so far but would like at least 300.

“We need information on how people would use a co-op, what they’d pay for membership, what they want to see offered at a co-op, and so on,” she said.

“The information is very important to our effort.”
