Buffalo Wild Wings coming to Plattsburgh


PLATTSBURGH — A Buffalo Wild Wings restaurant coming to Consumer Square will create a lot of jobs.

The eatery will be one of three tenants in a 10,500-square-foot building to be located in the parking lot south of Panera Bread. Franchise owners Martti Matheson and Aaron Miller expect to hire about 100 full- and part-time employees initially.

The plan for the building was approved by the Town of Plattsburgh Planning Board at its April meeting.

“We are excited to be coming to Consumer Square,” Matheson said.

He said construction is expected to start in June, and if everything goes smoothly, the restaurant could be open by Thanksgiving. 


The restaurant will occupy 5,800 square feet of the freestanding building and seat between 250 and 280, including some outdoor patio seats.

The Buffalo Wild Wings brand has three focuses: wings, beer and sports.

The restaurants offer 20 flavors of chicken wings, and they have an extensive selection of “shareables” on the menu, such as mozzarella sticks, cheeseburger slammers and roasted garlic mushrooms. 

Also featured are burgers, sandwiches, wraps, chicken tenders, popcorn shrimp, salads and desserts.

Buffalo Wild Wings also has a full bar and numerous televisions to broadcast most major sporting events.


Matheson said Miller brings an extensive sports background, as he played hockey at the University of Vermont and then 15 years with the National Hockey League. 

Miller was also part of the silver-medal-winning U.S. Ice Hockey Team at the 2002 Winter Olympic Games. 

Both Matheson and Miller live in Burlington.


Matheson said they had been looking to open a Plattsburgh location for some time. A tentative deal at the former Ames Plaza on Route 3 never came to fruition.

The partners knew they wanted a spot on the Route 3 corridor and are pleased they were able to secure the Consumer Square location.

“For us, it was always about location,” Matheson said.

Plattsburgh Town Supervisor Bernie Bassett said the new restaurant will be good for Consumer Square, the town and the entire region, as well as those who find employment there.

“I’m excited we were able to bring that project forward,” he said. “I’m confident Buffalo Wild Wings will be well received by the community.”

This will be the fifth Buffalo Wild Wings franchise owned by Matheson and Miller. They have restaurants in Burlington, Concord, N.H., and Waterbury, Conn.

Matheson said they expect to open one in Southington, Conn., in July.


The Plattsburgh building plans call for a 2,200-square-foot restaurant on the north end and a 2,500-square-foot retail space in the center.

The other restaurant expected to locate in that space is a Chipotle Mexican Grill, but the company would not confirm that.

Chipotle spokesperson Chris Arnold said the company doesn’t talk about details of a particular project until a lease has been signed and construction is scheduled.

“At this time, it does not appear there is anything that meets those criteria,” he said by email.


According to the company website, Buffalo Wild Wings has 900 restaurants in the United States and Canada. 

The chain reported total revenue of $1.04 billion in fiscal 2012, compared with $784 million in 2011. Net earnings were $57.2 million in 2012, compared to $50.4 million in 2011.

The chain was founded in 1982 at Ohio State University in Columbus by Jim Disbrow and Scott Lowery. They started to offer franchise opportunities in 1992, and the company went public in 2003.


Consumer Square is owned by Florida-based Benderson Development. 

With two restaurants, the new building was expected to stress the Sorrell Avenue wastewater lift station that serves the property, which is located on Sorrell Avenue.

The company has agreed to provide $45,000 for improvements to the station; the work is expected to cost about $300,000.

Bassett said that is the latest example of the town’s push for more public/private partnerships. 

“Benderson was willing to work with us to help defray the cost. That allowed us to be able to get to it a little earlier.”
