St. Mary’s pastor dies
CHAMPLAIN — The Rev. James A. Delbel, who served as a Catholic priest in the area for many years, died Wednesday, but a fundraiser planned for him will continue.
Delbel was pastor of St. Mary’s Church in Champlain and had been suffering from cancer and kidney problems.
Jack Dawson of the Father Francis X. Chagnon Council Knights of Columbus 3525 in Champlain said the fundraiser will still be held 3 to 7:30 p.m. Saturday at the K of C Hall in Champlain.
It will include a spaghetti dinner and entertainment by The Castaways, a singing duo of Mitch Willette and Mel Frechette.
Entrance is on a donation basis.
“Numerous retrofittings to the rectory (including a wheelchair lift) have already been accomplished, which he enjoyed in his final days; plus his numerous bills are still pending,” Dawson said in a statement.
“We need your support. The fundraiser will serve both as an opportunity for healing our community and an opportunity to visit with father’s immediate family.
“The 5:30 p.m. Mass is still scheduled, except the intention has been changed for the repose of his soul.
“We thank you for any donations that have already been sent and hope that we will hear from you or see you on the 13th.”
Donations may also be sent to K of C Council 3525 Charitable Fund, PO Box 96, Champlain, NY 12919.
