Malone man faces felony criminal sex charges

SARANAC LAKE — A Malone man, recently paroled on drug charges, was arrested Oct. 2 following an investigation alleging he sexually abused a child.

The Saranac Lake Police Department said Raymond A. Lopez Jr., 55, was arrested on a warrant at about 3:09 p.m. after someone contacted them to report that he had had sexually inappropriate contact with a victim under the age of 13.

He was charged with first-degree criminal sexual abuse, second-degree attempted criminal sexual act and criminal solicitation, all felonies.

Lopez also faces misdemeanor charges of forcible touching and endangering the welfare of a child relating to the investigation.

He was released on parole from Altona State Correctional Facility on July 20 after serving a little more than a year in prison custody.

Lopez, formerly of Canton, was sent to prison after pleading guilty to fifth-degree attempted criminal possession of a controlled substance.

He had been arrested in October 2008 following an investigation by Franklin and Essex County Drug Task Force; police said Lopez allegedly sold painkillers to an undercover officer on three separate occasions.

Following his most recent arrest, Lopez was arraigned in Saranac Lake Village Court and remanded to Franklin County Jail in lieu of $15,000 cash bail.

Police did not say when he was scheduled to reappear in court.
