New St. Armand town supervisor chosen

BLOOMINGDALE — The St. Armand Town Council will appoint Councilman Charles Whitson Jr. as new town supervisor.

Whitson will replace Joyce Morency, who died Dec. 3 after a long struggle with cancer.

The Town Council held an executive session Tuesday night then emerged to announce Whitson had been selected.

But he won’t be appointed until the town’s year-end meeting set for Thursday, Dec. 27.

Whitson was as a town councilman for 32 years then got off the board two years ago. He was appointed to a vacant seat in 2011, then won election to the unexpired term in the November general election last year. Once he is appointed supervisor, the board will have to name someone to his vacant position on council.

Morency took office in 1981 and was the longest serving member on the Essex County Board of Supervisors.

The post would normally have been up for election in November 2013, for a four-year term. Whitson will serve as interim supervisor until Dec. 31, 2013, and the winner of the election will take office Jan. 1, 2014.

  • Stepping forward: The real Colbert

Letterman changed the late-night TV game between his run on NBC's "Late Night" and starting the "Late Show" franchise in 1993. And while it's tough to replace a pop-culture icon, Colbert, in terms of pedigree and sense of humor, makes the most sense.
