---- — Village of Champlain public-works super to resign

CHAMPLAIN — At the Dec. 10 meeting of the Champlain Village Board, Public Works Superintendent Larry Sorrell will step down.

Mayor Greg Martin said he can’t discuss personnel issues so couldn’t give any details on what led to the resignation. The decision was reached during an executive session held during a special meeting on Tuesday evening.

The village will be advertising the position, he said, and he didn’t yet know who would head the department in the interim.

“I think it might be me, right now,” he said. “I’ve got the pager.”

Sorrell held the position for about four years.

Common Council to review home project

PLATTSBURGH — The City of Plattsburgh Common Council will review a light agenda at tonight’s meeting.

Among the items to be acted on are a request to approve a home project at 146 Miller St. in the amount of $24,950 and a request for the mayor to attend the New York Conference of Mayors 2013 Winter Legislative meeting in Albany Feb. 10 and 11, 2013 at an estimated cost not to exceed $900.

The meeting begins with a work session at 5 p.m, followed by the regular session at 5:30 p.m.

Both are open to the public.

Saranac Lake Lower Locks to shut down for winter

SARANAC LAKE — The Lower Locks on the Saranac Lakes Chain will be shut down for the winter, effective Monday, Dec. 10, according to the State Department of Environmental Conservation.

“The locks are closed and made inoperable every winter to avoid unsafe situations for users and to prevent damage to the locks,” a press release said.

Past operation of the locks in icy conditions caused damage to hoses, hydraulic rams and the hydraulic-control mechanism.

“The repair of these damages is costly and stops boater traffic in the highly utilized area while the locks are being repaired,” the release said.

DEC does not officially close the Upper Locks on the Saranac Lakes Chain, as they are manually operated and become inoperable when ice forms.

Unlike the Lower Locks, there is no hydraulic equipment that can be damaged.

The Lower Locks will be reopened after the ice goes out in the spring.

The session is open to the public.

Dannemora Council to discuss wireless-facility sites

DANNEMORA — The Dannemora Town Council will hold a special meeting at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 19, in the Methodist Church in Lyon Mountain.

A public hearing will be held to introduce a local law regulating the siting of wireless communications facilities.

The session will be followed by the regular December Board meeting at 6 p.m.

The public is invited to attend.
