Students: Dec. 1, 2012


---- — Two local residents were among the students from Roger Williams University, Bristol, R.I., to receive their degrees during the University’s Commencement ceremony: Kelilah Wolkowicz of Plattsburgh, a Bachelor of Science degree in engineering; and Jodi Payton, of Lake Placid, an Associate in Science degree in paralegal studies.

Marissa Horton of Saranac was named to the Dean’s List at Cornell University for the spring 2012 semester. She is a student in Cornell’s College of Agriculture and Life Sciences majoring in animal science on a pre-vet track. Horton is a 2010 graduate of Saranac Central High School and is the daughter of Mary and David Horton.

Tyler James Hoey of Peru graduated from Clemson University, Clemson, S.C., with a Bachelor of Science degree in biological sciences.

The following local students were awarded degrees from Binghamton University: Aimee Vilardo of Ticonderoga, a Bachelor of Science degree in nursing baccalaureate from the Decker School of Nursing; Eliza Claire Anderson of Plattsburgh, a Bachelor of Science degree in integ neuro molecular track from the Harpur College of Arts and Sciences; Laura Marie Scott of Plattsburgh, a Bachelor of Arts degree in Chinese studies from the Harpur College of Arts and Sciences; Rachael Ann Clark of Saranac Lake, a Bachelor of Science degree in integ neuro molecular track from the Harpur College of Arts and Sciences; and Timothy R. Strack of Plattsburgh, a Bachelor of Science degree in mechanical engineering from the Thomas J. Watson School of Engineering and Applied Science.

David Ellsworth and Jakob Hebert, both of Plattsburgh, were named to Dean’s List for the Spring 2012 semester at Siena College in Loudonville.

Recent SUNY Plattsburgh geology grad Kristin Negrycz was the winner of the Geological Society of America’s 2012 Outstanding Poster contest for the Northeast section. Her poster, “Apatite Fission-track Discontinuities Along a Transect Through the Grenville Province from Baie Comeau, Quebec, to Labrador City, Newfoundland-Labrador,” was chosen from a field of more than 150 other undergraduate posters presented at the northeastern section of the society in Hartford, Conn., this spring. Her poster was also displayed at the annual meeting of the society in Charlotte, N.C., in November.

Joshua Pierce of Elizabethtown has been awarded a scholarship to Paul Smith’s College funded with support from the National Science Foundation. Pierce, a senior who is majoring in fisheries and wildlife science, received one of four scholarships given under the college’s new Enhancing Ecological Education Scholarship Program.

Shannon Kelly of Saranac Lake was named to the 2012 spring semester Dean’s List at Genesee Community College, which has seven campus locations in Batavia, Albion, Arcade, Dansville, Lima, Medina and Warsaw.

Two local residents are among the students beginning their studies at St. Lawrence University, Canton, with a semester in London, England. This is the first time the option to study abroad has been offered to first-year students in the fall semester. Local participants are: Anna J. Kowanko of Upper Jay, a graduate of Keene Central School; and Alexa R. Mitchell of Westport, a graduate of Westport Central School.

The following students are participating in St. Lawrence University’s International Study Program (Canton) for the fall 2012 semester: Aubrey Fox of Elizabethtown, is studying in India; Alexander Gladwin of Plattsburgh, in London; Alex King of Morrisonville, in Australia - James Cook University; Taylor McCabe of Keene, in Kenya, Semester Program; Gabrielle Quinn of Saranac Lake, in France; and Emma Schneider-Ferrari of Plattsburgh, in France.

Sarah Rasco of Saranac graduated from SUNY Potsdam in May with a Masters of Arts & Sciences degree in mathematics.

Adam Blaine of Peru has been named to the Dean’s List for the summer quarter at Rochester Institute of Technology. A second-year student in RIT’s B. Thomas Golisano College of Computing and Information Sciences, Blaine is studying software engineering. He is the son of Michael Blaine and a 2011 graduate of Peru Central High School.
