Cook safely on Thanksgiving

PLATTSBURGH — The Clinton County Firefighters Association reminds the public to keep safety in mind during holiday time.

On Thanksgiving Day in 2009, three times the daily average number of home fires occurred, according to the National Fire Protection Association.

This may be because holiday food preparation can get hectic, and food may accidentally be left on the stove or in the oven too long, according to a news release from the Clinton County Firefighters Association.

More people than usual are commonly around the kitchen during Thanksgiving, and kids often like to help with the holiday preparations. 

Here are some safety tips recommended by the Firefighters Association:

▶ Stay in the kitchen when you are cooking on the stovetop so you can keep an eye on the food.

▶ Stay in the home when cooking your turkey and check on it frequently.

▶ Keep children at least 3 feet away from the stove.

▶ Make sure kids stay away from hot food and liquids. The steam or splash from vegetables, gravy or coffee can cause serious burns.

▶ Keep the floor clear so you don’t trip over bags, toys, pocketbooks or other items.

▶ Keep knives out of the reach of children.

▶ Be sure electric cords from an electric knife, coffeemaker, plate warmer or mixer are not dangling off the counter within easy reach of a child.

▶ Keep matches and utility lighters out of the reach of children — up high in a locked cabinet.

▶ Never leave children alone in room with a lit candle.

▶ Make sure your smoke alarms are working. Test them by pushing the test button.
