Noble to test longer turbine blades at Clinton Windpark

CLINTON — Noble Environmental Power is installing longer blade sets on three turbines in its Noble Clinton Windpark as part of a pilot project intended to test the performance-increase projections provided to Noble by the manufacturer.

Increased surface area of the blades allows a turbine to safely create more power at lower wind speeds, according to a press release from the wind-power company.

Noble will evaluate the modified turbines afterwards to see if longer blades on more turbines would be safe, efficient and cost effective. There will be a minimal increase in traffic — oversized blade trailers and crane equipment trailers — moving to and from the turbine sites during the project, which is expected to take a few months, the release said.

The oversized vehicles have permits, Noble said, and the Town of Clinton’s Wind Facilities Planning Board approved the pilot project earlier in 2012.

Following an evaluation period, the board will be provided information on the results of the project.
