Gala raises money for residency program

PLATTSBURGH — It was a roomful of black ties and gowns as the Foundation of CVPH held its 25th-annual gala Saturday night at the Crete Memorial Civic Center.

The event raised money for the Champlain Valley Family Medicine Residency.

The theme of the party, which changes every year, was the Silver Screen, encouraging guests to dress in formal wear.

The Civic Center had been transformed to look like a Hollywood venue, complete with a red carpet, gold and silver accents, chandeliers provided by Schonbek and tables decorated with stars, fabric globe lanterns and even lighted ice cubes.

The night began with a champagne hour for the highest sponsors before opening up to about 500 guests for an evening of food and live music.

Kerry Haley, executive director of the Foundation of CVPH, said the residency program aims to encourage more medical residents to train in the area, adding that “60 percent of physicians stay (close to) where they train.”

Ron LaValley, general manager of Empire State Coca-Cola, has attended the annual gala for the past 25 years and works for one of the 39 sponsors that underwrote the event.

“I have two young daughters who are both looking at medical fields, so we’re pretty excited that there are some residency programs here to keep them from leaving the area,” he said. “My wife is very happy about that.”

The Joey Thomas Big Band performed dance music for gala attendees and had another show, of Sinatra music, at the Strand Theatre in Plattsburgh on Sunday afternoon.

The dinner, catered by Anthony's Restaurant & Bistro, featured filet mignon and roasted shrimp.

The gala also featured a silent auction with numerous donated items and a live auction that included a trip to Africa, polo lessons, a kayak, a Pat Reynolds painting and more.
