Frontier Town Gas Station to reopen

NORTH HUDSON — The former Frontier Town Gas Station at Exit 29 of the Adirondack Northway could reopen by mid July or sooner.

Muhammad Ahmad, who bought the service station/convenience store on Blue Ridge Road for $130,000 in the April 30 Essex County tax auction, said he’s already getting the place in shape.

“I’m working on opening in July,” he told the Press-Republican. “It’s all promising. I’m looking forward to it.”

Ahmad also runs the Schroon Lake Sunoco Station at Exit 28 under a lease agreement, and he said he intends to operate both businesses in the future.

Many North Hudson residents already patronize his Sunoco Station, he said.

“It‘s a good opportunity, good for business, to serve the North Hudson community. I know most of them (town residents) already, and it is good for them and for me. It is a new beginning.”

North Hudson Town Supervisor Ronald Moore said townspeople are excited that they will again have a gas station in the community.

The Frontier Town Gas Station operated for about five years after the Wild West theme park closed in 1998, and, in fact, had new underground gasoline storage tanks installed in 2001.

“Tanks and lines are OK,” Ahmed said. “We had everything tested. We have to put in new pumps, dispensers.”

The station is located across from the defunct park, which the County Board of Supervisors recently agreed to pull from the tax sale and sell to the Town of North Hudson for $60,000.

Moore said the town will use the theme park to create snowmobile, horse, mountain bike and hiking trails. He said the Boreas Pond lands the state acquired from Finch Paper will soon be open, and there will be new trails to Newcomb, Long Lake and Inlet that will draw visitors to North Hudson.

Frontier Town could serve as a trailhead for those new paths, Moore said, and having a gas station and general store across the street could be a big advantage for the community.
