Police: Two heroin dealers arrested

PLATTSBURGH — Plattsburgh City Police arrested two alleged heroin dealers Friday — one of whom was taken into custody earlier this week on separate drug charges.

Both Sapphire B. Staley and Qaiyum Q. Pretty were already Clinton County Jail inmates at the time of their arrest, according to the Clinton County Sheriff's Department.

Indictments from a Clinton County grand jury charge Staley, 21, of Plattsburgh and Pretty, 33, of Schuyler Falls with two counts of third-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance and two counts of third-degree criminal sale of a controlled substance, both felonies.

Pretty was additionally charged with sale at or near a school zone, a felony, said Plattsburgh City Police Lt. Patrick Rascoe.

The arrest warrants were signed by Clinton County Judge Patrick McGill earlier this week, he said.

'UNDERCOVER BUYS'

Undercover agents from the Adirondack Drug Task Force bought heroin twice from both Staley and Pretty in the City of Plattsburgh earlier this year, Rascoe said.

Pretty, also known as "Q," was charged with third-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance Monday when police allegedly found 490 bags of heroin that were stashed in the trunk of a vehicle following a traffic stop.

State Police said the drugs are worth almost $10,000, with a street price of $35 to $40 per bag.

'SOLD NEAR SCHOOL'

The region's growing heroin problem has prompted police working the narcotics beat to zone in on the highly addictive opiate.

"The Task Force is specifically targeting heroin in their investigations to try to get a handle on it," Rascoe said.

Staley and Pretty were arraigned in County Court and returned to jail, where they remained Friday, according to the Sheriff's Department.

Staley's bail was set at $20,000 cash or $40,000 bond; Pretty is being held on $25,000 cash or $50,000 bond.

She has been in jail since April 14 on a charge of endangering the welfare of a child, a misdemeanor, the Sheriff's Department said.

She and Pretty are both due back in court May 28.
