---- — Plattsburgh Beach entry shut down today

PLATTSBURGH — The entrance to the Plattsburgh City Beach will be closed today from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. for paving of the that area.

There will be limited access to the Crete Civic Center and no access to the dog park.

Construction suspends stargazing until May 30

TUPPER LAKE — The Adirondack Public Observatory has suspended public stargazing until completion of construction of the roll-off roof building.

The opportunity to check out the stars will resume on Friday, May 30, and continue every Friday evening through the summer. For private stargazing parties, call 359-3538.

Whiteface Highway to open despite repair work

WILMINGTON — In spite of repair work ongoing to the Whiteface Mountain Veterans Memorial Highway, the 8-mile-long scenic roadway will open for the season. 

Saturday, May 17, through June 30, hours are 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Saturdays and Sunday; Monday, May 26, it will be open from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., as well.

The highway will then open seven days a week starting July 1 and continue through Sept. 1, also 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Saturday and Sunday operations will resume Sept. 6 through Oct. 5. 

The $12 million restoration of the roadway, its drainage system, some historic elements and septic and water system improvements for the castle at the summit, is expected to take two years. 

Completed in 1935 and dedicated to veterans of all wars, the highway is traveled by some 70,000 people each year between mid May and mid October. 

The cost is $10 for vehicle and driver and $7 for each additional passenger. Cyclists pay $6 to travel to the summit and down again.

May 20 Altona Court session canceled

ALTONA — Altona Town Court will not take place on Tuesday, May 20.

Those scheduled to appear then instead will be expected in court on Tuesday, June 3.

AVCS School Board sets meeting, vote dates

CLINTONVILLE — The AuSable Valley Central School Board meeting will be held at 6 p.m. Tuesday, May 20, in the Middle School-High School conference room, Clintonville.

It is anticipated that the meeting will begin with presentations, followed by an executive session, then regular session.

The board will consider special-education recommendations, the date for the reorganizational meeting and personnel issues.

The annual budget vote and School Board election will be held noon to 9 p.m. Tuesday, May 20, at the Middle School-High School cafeteria.
