JCEO roadside food stands expanding

MALONE — Joint Council for Economic Opportunity greenhouse staff add to the fresh produce available to pantries and local citizens.

The JCEO program supplies non-perishable goods to food pantries in Clinton, Franklin, Essex and St. Lawrence counties and also operates a greenhouse on Creighton Road.

The young plants to be distributed through the food pantries to clientele interested in gardens were grown by staff at the greenhouse, which provides all kinds of fresh produce to area food pantries, as well as to local grocery stores.

Staff also operate a roadside stand at the site, but a second stand will be tried this year, said Dick LaVigne of the JCEO Food Service Division.

The new stand will open to the left of Kinney Drugs on Route 11 and staffed by paid high-school and college students.

He said a 10-by-20-foot tent will be set up July 1 to Sept. 15 and operate from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays.

The Route 11 site and the original stand on Creighton Road are both closed on Wednesdays so as not to interfere with the Adirondack Farmers Market, which is held every Wednesday at the Malone Dufort Airport pavilion, LaVigne said.
