Newsmakers: May 9, 2014

Joseph Merrihew, a technology education teacher at Saranac Lake Middle School, was recently recognized by the New York State Technology Education and Engineering Association as one of its Regional Teachers of the Year. Merrihew has a long list of accomplishments at Saranac Lake Middle School. He created all new courses for grades six through eight that would integrate the math and ELA Common Core with the New York State Technology Learning Standards. He is a certified snowboard instructor at Whiteface Mountain and a coach for both the modified and varsity track teams. He runs an after-school middle school STEM Club and advises the YENGA Club, which takes a variety of trips, from mountain hiking to downhill skiing, and organizes fundraisers to ensure that every student can attend the trips.

Assemblywoman Janet L. Duprey of Peru has been recognized by the non-profit Hispanic women’s organization Entre Nosotras for her advocacy on behalf of women’s rights and children with special needs. An award was presented to Duprey by Assemblywoman Carmen Arroyo (D-Bronx) at a luncheon in Albany at the 27th-annual SOMOS Conference held by the New York State Assembly/Senate Puerto Rican/Hispanic Task Force. Arroyo said the Entre Nosotras Board of Directors voted unanimously to honor Duprey for her many accomplishments on behalf of women and her tireless efforts as an education advocate, particularly in support of students with special needs. 

At the United Way of the Adirondack Region Inc. annual meeting and recognition dinner, four new members were elected to the Board of Directors: Mark Davey, district superintendent of Champlain Valley Educational Services; Billy Jones, chair of the Franklin County Legislature; Chris Mazzella, principal of Peru High School; and Brian Waters, assistant vice president of the facilities services at the Adirondack Health. The following officers were re-elected: Gerald Marrow, supervisor, Town of Chesterfield, as president of the board; Victoria Marking, marketing manager of Prime Link, as vice president; Ed Davis, vice president of Northern Insuring Agency Inc., as secretary; and Joyce Rafferty, chief financial officer of Champlain Valley Physician Hospital as treasurer.
