Winter Carnival theme chosen

SARANAC LAKE — People here aren’t pushing to forget the frigid winter so fast.

The Village of Saranac Lake, with among the coldest temperatures in the Northeast, has Winter Carnival in its sights, even with an Adirondack summer ahead.

Winter Carnival planners, formally known as the Society for Promotion of Winter Carnival, Saranac Lake, have picked the theme for next year.

According to Society Chairman Eric Foster, the winter will bring some “Groovy 60’s” fun to town.

There has been no official word yet if there will be a VW flower-power bus on hand at the Ice Palace next year.

But Foster is encouraging folks to dig out the bell-bottoms and beads.

“The decade of the ‘60s was a very significant period of history for our nation with many achievements, including landing on the moon and the birth of many popular music genres. It was also a great time of positive change, and we’re looking forward to focusing on those aspects and having a very fun celebration,” he said in press announcement.

“When narrowing down ideas, committee members weighed a number of factors, including whether a theme could fit well in the parade and the construction of the Ice Palace and generate suitable music for the myriad of festivities during the 10-day-long event.”

The Groovy 60’s theme won out over four others: Adirondack Fiesta, Beach Party, Haunted Adirondacks and Prehistoric Park.

A public poll was done via local media and the Winter Carnival website:

The 2015 Saranac Lake Winter Carnival runs from Feb. 6 to 15 next year, encompassing Valentine’s Day.

Not to be forgotten in the heat this summer, Winter Carnival is also hosting a celebration in July.

A new event, the Saranac Lake Winter Carnival Summer Gala will be celebrated at the Harrietstown Town Hall on July 11, a Friday night.
