TICONDEROGA — Adirondack Meat Co. will receive $300,000 for adding a 7,500-square-foot USDA-certified food-processing facility to its site here.
The facility, which is up and running with a dozen new jobs already created, is expected to generate a total of 17 jobs in Essex County.
The company also plans to open a retail store on Wicker Street in Ticonderoga on May 1. The store will offer branded products with an Adirondack label.
Adirondack Meat Co. processes meat and returns packaged products to livestock suppliers.
It is the first USDA-certified processing facility in the Adirondack Park, and it reduces the distance traveled by livestock farmers and helps cut the lengthy wait time for products.
The upgrades will allow Adirondack Meat Co. to provide faster turnaround, as well as the needed capacity to limit processing transportation costs and delays, resulting in increased profitability and sustainability for area farmers, the state said.
Based on survey responses from area livestock growers, the facility is anticipated to double the production of livestock.
“We look forward to working with local beef, pork, sheep and goat producers throughout the North Country and Champlain Valley region of New York state,” Adirondack Meat Co. owner Peter Ward said in a news release.
“Working with local producers on the growing need for fresh, all-natural animals will be very productive for our region.”
He thanked Gov. Andrew Cuomo and his staff, Essex County IDA, Empire State Development, North Country Regional Economic Development Council, NYS Ag & Markets, USDA RD, North Country Alliance, Cornell Cooperative Extension, the Town of Ticonderoga, Ticonderoga Area Chamber of Commerce and Essex County Board of Supervisors for their help.
Ticonderoga Town Supervisor Bill Grinnell called the business “a vital part of our community and our local economy,” adding, “We are very happy to hear that it is expanding and creating additional good-paying jobs for our residents.”
