Lake Placid woman charged with arson

RAY BROOK — A woman wanted for almost two years on arson charges drove from Kentucky to Ray Brook to turn herself in to State Police.

Stephanie L. Brier, who turns 20 in June, was charged with second-degree arson, a felony. She was 17 at the time of the alleged crime.

The former Lake Placid woman’s case dates back to May 26, 2012, when she and a 14-year-old Lake Placid girl attempted to set fire to a residence while the family slept inside, said State Police Troop B Public Information Officer Trooper Jennifer Fleishman.

The two young women used a beer can, lighter fluid and cloth to try to set the outside of a mobile home in Cascade Acres in the Town of North Elba aflame, Fleishman said.

Brier was allegedly targeting a person she knew to be in the home.

The siding of the trailer was damaged by flames, but no one was injured, Fleishman said.

Brier fled the state with her father, Trever A. Brier, 41, who was running from a felony DWI charge out of Lake Placid, the trooper said.

The 14-year-old was also charged with second-degree arson. Police aren’t releasing the name of the teen since she was a juvenile at the time.

Brier learned police were looking for her and her father when she saw a warrant poster that State Police posted on their Facebook page as part of their Warrant Wednesday program, Fleishman said.

A State Police investigator received some calls tipping him off to the Briers possibly living in Bowling Green, Kentucky.

The investigator spoke with Ms. Brier and convinced her to give herself up, Fleishman said.

The two drove back to the North Country, turning themselves in to police on March 23.

After Mr. Brier arrived at the Lake Placid Police Department that day, he was arrested on a bench warrant for failure to appear that Essex County Court had issued in September 2012, said Lake Placid Police Department Sgt. Charles Dobson.
