Chamber job training program funded

PLATTSBURGH — The North Country Chamber of Commerce has secured funding for its On the Job Training Program.

The $110,000 in funding through the New York State Department of Labor is included in the recently enacted 2014-15 State Budget.

North Country Chamber President Garry Douglas said this program is the most cost effective job placement and training program in New York.

“It’s simple. We work with employers to devise on-the-job training plans for unemployed persons who need a period of such training before transitioning into permanent employment. Partial reimbursement can then be provided to the employer for their commitment during the training period so long as a successful transition is achieved,” he said in a news release.

“We’ve consistently had a top performing On the Job Training program and now we will be able to carry on for an additional year, thanks to the support and leadership of State Sen. Betty Little.”

Little said on the job training benefits employees and employers alike and helps ensure the North Country remains competitive in the global marketplace.

“As our economy expands, new job opportunities are created. Developing new skills is essential,” she said.

“I am very pleased to have succeeded in securing this funding, knowing how beneficial it will be to those looking to enhance their skills and secure good jobs.”

The program is a long standing initiative of the New York State Senate. The chamber has offered the program to qualified employers and trainees in Clinton, Franklin, Essex and Hamilton counties for several years.
