Local BPW names Young Careerist

Emily Owens receives the 2014 Virginia Allan award

PLATTSBURGH — Emily Owens has been named the 2014 Virginia Allan Careerist by the Champlain Valley Business and Professional Women’s Club.

Owens, development officer with Essex-based College for Every Student, was chosen from a field of four finalists.

“I was definitely honored to be selected,” she said. “There were a number of other wonderful contestants who spoke on important issues.”

The finalists were chosen on their applications, resume and an essay based on the Business and Professional Women’s Legislative Platform.

Owens said the platform includes a number of vital issues, such as equal pay for women, assurance of a safe work environment and the ability to balance work and family issues.

“I think it’s very important to have organizations that support women in business,” she said.

‘TOUGH DECISION’

The finalists went through an interview and delivered a five-minute speech at the club’s annual dinner, held March 25 at Olive Ridley’s in Plattsburgh.

The entrants were evaluated based on criteria such as their ability to communicate, poise, self-confidence, career goals and personal accomplishments.

Champlain Valley Business Club President-elect Kelley Plummer, who is business-development manager at Spherion staffing services in Plattsburgh, was one of the judges this year.

She said all of the finalists made excellent presentations, but Owens excelled in more areas and was ultimately chosen.

“It made it very tough on us as judges,” Plummer said. “It came down to splitting hairs.”

HEALTHIER WORKPLACE

Owens spoke on the importance of creating a more active workplace to alleviate the effects of the long hours many people spend sitting behind a desk.

The topic came to her attention after she read articles that espoused the view that prolonged sitting is the “new smoking,” as far as being harmful to your health.

“My idea was to pick an issue we can all relate to,” Owens said, adding that some solutions are in use in her workplace.
