Plattsburgh woman charged with arson

---- — PLATTSBURGH — A Plattsburgh woman was charged with arson early Thursday after she allegedly set fire to a tent in which her ex-boyfriend was living.

At about 2:18 a.m. Thursday morning, Plattsburgh City Police officers were dispatched to 5 Charles Way for a complaint of a dispute, said Plattsburgh City Police Lt. Beebie.

In the back of 9 Charles Way in the mobile-home park, police found a tent burning, Beebie said.

Present were Velma Bellarosa, 48, of 10 Charles Way, her 51-year-old ex-boyfriend and his current girlfriend, Beebie said.

That woman lives in the same park, he said.

There was no physical contact among any of the three parties during the dispute, and no children were present, Beebie said.

The fire caused minor damage to the skirting of the mobile home at 9 Charles Way, the lieutenant said.

The value of the items in the tent and destroyed by the fire— personal belongings including clothing, a cellphone and various paperwork — was unknown Friday, Beebie said.

Bellarosa was arrested soon after police discovered the fire, he said.

She was charged with fourth-degree arson, a felony, and fourth-degree criminal mischief, a misdemeanor.

Bellarosa was arraigned in Plattsburgh City Court and transferred to the Clinton County Jail in lieu of $1,000 cash or $2,000 bond.

She remained in County Jail Friday, according to the Clinton County Sheriff’s Department, and is due back in City Court at 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 24.
