DANNEMORA — Dannemora Federal Credit Union would like to congratulate the following employees on their recent advancements within the Credit Union.
Heather Rancour, formerly a consumer loan officer, has been promoted to mortgage loan officer at the Tom Miller Road branch. She has been with the credit union since 2007.
Christie Facteau, formerly a collections assistant, has been promoted to consumer loan officer at theTom Miller Road branch. She has been with the Credit Union since 2006.
Also, Brittany Surprenant has been hired as a consumer loan officer, also at the Tom Miller Road branch.
On June 28, the employees of Credit Union paid $5 to wear jeans to work to support the Alzheimer’s Disease Assistance Center as part of their monthly Jean Day Program. On July 15, Jenifer Provost of DFCU presented a check in the amount of $367 to Lee Vera of the Alzheimer’s Disease Assistance Center. Proceeds from the event will go toward the organization’s annual Alzheimer’s Walk to Remember on Sunday, Sept. 29.
Anyone wishing to apply for Jean Day sponsorship should email firstname.lastname@example.org. Applications remain on file for one year and are reviewed and voted on on a monthly basis. All proceeds raised by the staff of DFCU are then matched by the board and presented to the organization following the event.
To date, DFCU has donated $3,917 to local organizations through their Jean Day Program, which began in May 2012.
LAKE PLACID — Lake Placid Spirits LLC has selected McCraith Beverages and High Peaks Distributing Co. as a partner in marketing the Lake Placid Spirits spirituous beverages.
“We are very excited to enter into this agreement, which covers 10 counties of Central and Northern New York State and a significant portion of our home region, the Adirondack Park,” said Ann Stillman O’Leary, president of Lake Placid Spirits.
“We are now in our fifth year of artisanal distillation and bottling and this arrangement with the McCraith family will significantly expand our market presence.”

Distiller Twig McGlynn added that their forth product, Blue Line Gin, has been released in time for the busy Adirondack summer season. The name Blue Line Gin denotes the boundary of the Adirondack Park. By law, gin must have juniper berries and locally harvested additional botanical to the juniper is Northern White Pine.
“We harvest the new spring growth, which is filled with sweet chlorophyll, and distill the White Pine along with the juniper and other classic Gin botanicals for a very smooth and distinct new American Gin,” he said.
Lake Placid Spirits LLC is a five-year-old micro-distillery making 46 Peaks Potato Vodka, P3 Placid vodka filtered with Adirondack Garnet, and Alpenglow Cranberry Maple Flavored Vodka, which uses locally sourced cranberries from the Deer River Cranberry farm in Brasher Falls and maple syrup from the Uihlein Forest Maple Station of Lake Placid.

PLATTSBURGH — Excellus BlueCross BlueShield has exceeded federal and state standards by $330 million in the amount it spent on medical benefits on behalf of its membership in 2012, officials have reported.
To cap profits and administrative costs of health plans in order to maximize medical benefits to consumers, the federal Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act and state regulations set certain medical benefit spending levels for insurers. For the second consecutive year of the new rules and reporting, Excellus BlueCross BlueShield exceeded the standards.
“Our mission is to provide competitive, affordable access to quality health care,” said Christopher Booth, chief executive officer for the health plan. “What this means is that our members collectively got more hospital and physician services, prescriptions and other medical benefits throughout the year than what federal and state government standards require.”
Some health insurers that didn’t meet the standards will be required to pay refunds.
State and federal standards, as they apply to New York commercial insurance customers, set the minimum level of benefits to be 82 percent of premium revenues in the individual direct pay market along with small groups and 85 percent for large groups. Excellus BCBS reports that it spent 94.9 percent of premium revenues on medical benefits for its individual direct pay membership, 92.5 percent for small groups and 92.1 percent for large groups.
Out of $4.1 billion in premium revenues collected, the health plan paid out $3.8 billion in medical benefits for its customers, about $330 million more than federal and state mandates require. Last year, federal officials reported that hundreds of millions of dollars in refunds were paid by other health plans throughout the country, even in states where the minimum standards are lower than those in New York.
PLATTSBURGH — This summer, Boys and Girls Clubs of America and Staples are teaming up with teen actor Jake T. Austin for the sixth-annual Staples for Students national school supply drive to help kids get the tools they need to build great futures.
From June 30 to Sept. 28, Staples customers can donate $1 or more at their local Staples store with 100 percent of the proceeds benefiting local students at the Boys and Girls Club of Burlington, Vt., Inc. The local Staples store to make a donation is located at 77 Consumer Square.
To kick-start the campaign, Staples will donate $125,000 worth of school supplies to the program this year. Since 2008, the campaign has raised nearly $3 million for hundreds of thousands of students in need throughout the country. Past celebrity influencers have included Jordin Sparks, Ciara, Nikki Reed, the cast of Pretty Little Liars and Bella Thorne.
Teens are also encouraged to spread the word on social media. They can visit the Staples for Students Facebook page where Austin will take followers through a series of interactive missions to help drive donations. As missions are completed, teens will be rewarded with donations on their behalf to Boys and Girls Clubs, coupons for school supplies, and opportunities to participate in sweepstakes.
There are 4,000 Boys and Girls Clubs in communities nationwide serving nearly 4 million youth ages 6-18 by providing a safe, productive place for young people during the after-school time frame. Clubs offer caring mentors and programming that help youth, many of whom come from disadvantaged circumstances, advance in the areas of education, health and wellness, and develop character and leadership skills.
PLATTSBURGH — Community Bank NA, Coldwell Banker Whitbeck Associates and NCCCA Arts Centerwill co-host this month’s edition of Business After Hours.
The North Country Chamber of Commerce invites area business people to the event on Thursday from 5:30 to 7 p.m. The mixer will be held in conjunction with the Arts Center’s Jumpin in July concert series on the lawn at 23 Brinkerhoff Street. The rain location is the Strand Theater.
Participants will meet with friends, make new business contacts, enjoy food, listen to music by Hen House Prowlers and celebrate summer at this month’s event.

TICONDEROGA — The Ticonderoga Federal Credit Union (TFCU) will host a Self Defense Class led by Murray’s Family Martial Arts Center instructors. The class will take place Tuesday, Aug. 13, at 6:30 p.m. at the Best Western Plus in Ticonderoga.
Participants will learn a modern approach to today’s personal-protection needs using awareness and prevention techniques. Attendees will learn joint locks and manipulation, release from wrist grabs and punch and kick defense mechanisms. All are welcome, although the class will focus on women’s concerns.
Attendees are encouraged to wear comfortable attire. The class is free, however cash donations and toiletry items such as soap, shampoo and toothpaste will be accepted at the event in support of local Stop Domestic Violence organizations.
Attendees must be at least 14 years of age and must bring a signed waiver to the event. Waiver forms are available at www.tfcunow.com as well as at all TFCU branches. Participants under age 18 will need a parent or guardian to sign the waiver.

PLATTSBURGH — Glens Falls National bank will hold a Community Appreciation Day from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Aug. 16 at 5023 U.S. Avenue in Plattsburgh.
The event will be a fun day filled with free activities for families, raffles and refreshments. There will be a book reading by local author Amy Guglielmo, a bouncy house, an Airborne Speedway race car and a hole-in-one contest sponsored by Bluff Point Golf.
