Altona man charged with raping child

ALTONA — An Altona man is charged with first-degree rape involving a girl younger than age 13.

John W. Peryea, 44, was arrested Friday, also charged with predatory sexual assault against a child and first-degree criminal sex act, both felonies, and endangering the welfare of a child, a misdemeanor.

Peryea was a friend of his victim’s family, according to a State Police press release.

Chazy-based State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation, Clinton County Child Protective Services and the Clinton County District Attorney’s Office investigated the case.

Peryea was arraigned before Town Justice Eli Lambert in Altona Court and sent to the Clinton County Jail without bail. He is scheduled to reappear on Aug. 6.

In December 2010, Peryea was charged with two counts of driving while intoxicated — State Police said then that he was driving recklessly, swerving across Rand Hill Road in Plattsburgh.

Because he had a previous DWI conviction, the charges were both felonies.
