ROUSES POINT — In the five years since its construction, many different acts have taken the stage in Rouses Point.
This summer is no exception, with a range of performers from country singers to a barbershop quartet and even a hypnotist scheduled to perform.
The festivities begin at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, July 10, with a performance of “The Little Mermaid Jr.” presented by the Adirondack Regional Theater.
“We try and do everything. We try to have something for the kids, teens and adults,” said Steve Merchant, founding member of “Friends of the Stage,” the group responsible for building the stage and organizing performances for the past five years.
This summer’s lineup has something for the whole family, including a “Kids Night” magic show and the rendition of “The Little Mermaid Jr.”
Merchant had the idea for a stage when he was serving on the Fourth of July committee in Rouses Point. He saw there was room in the budget and suggested the idea of a stage to his colleagues.
The rest is history.
“Seems like just yesterday we were trying to figure out where to build a stage and what it would look like,” Merchant said. “When I was a kid they had a stage and concerts and everyone would go down, so I said, ‘Why don’t we build an outdoor stage? Lets get it going.’”
Local businesses, contractors and professionals pitched in to build the three-sided stage, which is roughly 20-by-30 feet with a roof.
“Without the support of all these businesses and people we couldn’t have done it. I work with a great group of volunteers who work really hard to make it all happen,” Merchant said, adding that “Friends of the Stage” is always looking for volunteers and donations.
The stage was recently outfitted with lights and “Friends of the Stage” plans to add a dressing room among other improvements.
