Lookback: Week of June 30 to July 6

 25 YEARS — 1989

• The merger of the two Plattsburgh Catholic High Schools — St. John’s Academy and Mount Assumption Institute — is expected to allow for the formation of a true middle school for St. John’s and possibly the entire Plattsburgh Catholic school system. St. John’s will continue to serve pre-kindergarten through eighth grade as it always has but the middle school level will go from a self-contained classroom concept to a departmentalized style found in high schools.

• Twenty Soviet students from Leningrad and their five chaperones are currently visiting Plattsburgh as part of the “Kids Meeting Kids Can Make a Difference” diplomacy program between the United States and the Soviet Union. They are being hosted by area families and their activities so far have consisted of riding Frank Pabst’s MV Juniper Lake Champlain Tour Boat, spending a day at Champlain Centre Malls and talking with Gov. Mario Cuomo in Albany.

• A group of 10 to 12 Japanese macque monkeys were spotted roaming through Mooers and Champlain, the last of a group of 75 to 80 that recently escaped from their Parc Safari Africain exhibit. Officials said the animals, about 1 1/2 to 2 feet in height and with the temperaments of chipmunks, are not dangerous. Residents were encouraged to lure the monkeys into sheds and garages using fruit bait, trap them inside and contact Parc Safari officials to come and retrieve them.

50 YEARS — 1964

• A shipment of Japanese artwork, including paintings and design work, from University Junior High School in Hokkaido, Japan. is now on display in Westport Central School. A Japanese newspaper clipping was also included which described for Japanese readers the Lake Champlain Region, the town of Westport and details on art education in the United States. A shipment of artwork from Westport students was sent in exchange and will be displayed in the Japanese school in July.
