Popular underage drinking spot busted

PLATTSBURGH — Plattsburgh City Police and University Police have seen a surge in underage drinking parties in Rugar Woods, specifically in an area of the woods known by local youths as “Guam.”

This past week, Plattsburgh City Police received information on two such parties. Both were broken up by police.

About 200 teenagers were dispersed at the first party and 100 at the second. And one person was taken to CVPH Medical Center for alcohol intoxication.

In addition to hazards from the illegal consumption of alcohol, police say, natural hazards are present at the party location, including the Saranac River, Imperial Dam and rocky ledges.

Young people often communicate dates and times of such parties via text messages and social-media feeds like Twitter and Facebook.

The police are asking the public, especially parents and guardians, for help in deterring these parties.

People who are aware of parties in the woods — or any illegal activities — are encouraged to call City Police at 563-3411 or University Police at 564-2202.

Police plan to conduct regular checks in Rugar Woods, and people found to be in violation of the law will be arrested.
