City of Plattsburgh hydrant program starts today

PLATTSBURGH — The Plattsburgh City Fire Department is beginning its fire hydrant water flow program today and will, over the next few weeks, inspect every hydrant in the municipality.

The inspections will take place between the hours of 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday, with the streets where the hydrants are located published in the Press-Republican.

Each hydrant will be opened for three to five minutes as part of the process. Because the water in the system will be stirred up, it may be cloudy or rust colored as it flows from faucets.

The city advises users to avoid washing clothes or bathing during test times.

Also, officials advise motorists to show caution when driving past a flowing hydrant to ensure the safety of the Fire Department personnel performing the inspection.

Today’s streets are: Cornelia Street, Healey and Kennedy avenues, Rugar Street, Erin and College avenues, Shamrock Court, Terrace West Way and Sandra and Cogan avenues.
