Town of Franklin gets $200,000 for housing rehab

VERMONTVILLE  — The Town of Franklin has received a $200,000 grant for housing rehabilitation.

At a recent Franklin Town Council meeting, Sue Pickard, with Friends of the North Country, presented an overview of the program and process for administering the grant, which comes through the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development as part of the Community Development Block Grant Small Cities program.

The grant provides rehabilitation assistance to eligible applicants in the town.

There is a waiting list, Pickard said, so residents should apply soon to be included on the first-come, first-serve list.

The Town Council authorized Town Supervisor Art Willman to be certifying officer and also the fair-housing officer for the grant.

The Friends of the North Country will act as sub-recipient for the Town of Franklin.

Also at the recent meeting, according to minutes:

SENIOR SUPPORT: On behalf of the 55-Plus Club, Mary Ellen Keith thanked the Town Council for its $1,200 annual support but said they thought the contribution was going to be increased to $1,500, since the town had upped its donation to the Saranac Lake Adult Center by $400.

Willman said the Adult Center had written to the Town Council requesting the increase and suggested the 55-Plus Club do the same prior to budget time.

ALCOHOL SALES: Keith also expressed concern that alcohol sales have been approved at events sponsored by the town.

She said she feels these are family events and that allowing alcohol would send the wrong message to town youths. She pointed out that previous Founder’s Day events were successful without alcohol.

The supervisor said he would include the issue on the agenda for the next Town Council meeting.

SLUSHER REPLACEMENT: Highway Superintendent Jacques DeMars received approval to purchase a new slusher with insurance money, as the old one was damaged. The cost will be $7,000.
