PLATTSBURGH — The deadline for paying late taxes on Clinton County properties is here.
Property owners who do not pay their back taxes for 2012, 2013 and 2014 by 5 p.m. today will have their properties seized by the county and sold at auction.
“We certainly hope people will come forward before the deadline,” County Treasurer Kimberly Davis said.
The county initially was looking at 84 delinquent properties, but since bright-yellow warning signs were placed May 22 on the lawns or sides of buildings on late parcels, 25 owners have come forward to make payments.
Of the 59 late properties remaining, 23 are homes, 31 are vacant lots and five are businesses.
Davis said her office can take payments in the form of cashier checks, postal money orders, cash or credit cards with a 2.5 percent surcharge.
All payments must be made in person to the Treasurer’s Office on the second floor of the Clinton County Government Center at 137 Margaret St. by 5 p.m. today with no exceptions, Davis said.
“The money physically has to be here,” she said.
Since the yellow warning signs have gone up, some late property owners have been spurred to action.
“We’ve had people come forward and call us once they saw the signs, so they seemed to work, in some cases,” Davis said.
Any properties that do not have the back taxes paid by the deadline will be sold at a public auction on July 23 at West Side Ballroom in Plattsburgh.
Last year, the county sold 53 delinquent properties.
