Plattsburgh man arrested on child-sex-assault warrant

CHAMPLAIN — A Plattsburgh man was arrested at the border on a warrant issued out of Clinton County for a felony charge of sexual assault against a child.

On Tuesday, Joseph Eliof, 28, was brought to the Champlain Port of Entry by the Canadian Border Services Agency, according to a news release from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.

The Canadian Border Services Agency and U.S. Customs and Border Protection had previously made arrangements for Eliof to be returned to the United States, the Department of Homeland Security said in the release.

Eliof was charged once Customs and Border Protection officers verified the arrest warrant, according to the release.

The specific criminal charge being brought against him was not available Tuesday.

After his arrest, authorities turned him over to the U.S. Marshals Service, the Department of Homeland Security said.
