Local woman wins big in lottery

MORRISONVILLE – For Pamela Brothers, it hasn’t quite sunk in yet that she is the winner of a $20 million New York Lottery jackpot.

“We’re still trying to comprehend the whole thing,” said the Morrisonville mother of two, whose husband, Russell, purchased the lucky Win $1,000,000 a Year for Life ticket late last month.

On Oct. 19, Russell was at Champlain Centre mall in Plattsburgh looking at upcoming construction projects for his family’s business, Brothers Quality Construction, when he decided to get a haircut.

While waiting for his turn in the chair, he purchased several $20 scratch-off tickets at International Currency Exchange next door, lottery officials said in a news release.

Russell’s first two tickets were non-winners, but at about 2 p.m., he decided to buy one more, which turned out to be the jackpot winner.

He immediately called Pamela to tell her the news, but she wasn’t convinced he had really won until she saw the ticket for herself.

Russell gave the winning ticket to her to claim, which she did recently at the lottery’s Schenectady Customer Service Center, choosing to receive her prize as a one-time lump sum of $15,505,300 (net $10,261,408 after taxes).

The Brotherses, however, weren’t allowed to share their news with anyone until the lottery disclosed their names in an official announcement, Pamela said.

Keeping the news to themselves, she noted, was especially difficult since so many people know them through their construction business.

“Right now, it’s been really stressful,” Pamela told the Press-Republican.

Still, she added, “once it dies down, I’m sure it will be fine.”

Pamela is the 115th New Yorker to claim a lottery prize of $1,000,000 or more so far this year.

While the couple haven’t yet given a whole lot of thought to how they will use the lottery winnings, Pamela said, they will likely get new equipment for the family business and buy cars for themselves and their two children.
