Speed a factor in fatal crash, authorities say

---- — CROGHAN — The Malone man killed in a Lewis County car crash Saturday thought his wife was having a heart attack and was trying to get her to a hospital.

Samuel Demo, 57, of 47 Willow St. died on Effley Falls Road in the Town of Croghan about 11:50 p.m. Saturday after he was ejected from his vehicle as it rolled three times.

“Speed was definitely a factor,” said Lewis County Undersheriff James Monnat. “They have a camp on Effley Falls Road, but he was definitely going too fast for conditions.

“It’s made of macadam, but it’s not a traveled road. It’s in a remote area, and there was still sand on the road from winter.

“It looks like he went off the side of the road, overcorrected and went downhill on a slight curve,” Monnat said.

He said a passer-by reported the crash but, by the time Croghan ambulance and Beaver Falls ambulance teams arrived, he had died.

His wife, Kathi, was taken to Lewis County General Hospital in Lowville, where she was treated for minor injuries, “but nothing was said” about a heart attack, Monnat said.

She was released the next day.

An autopsy was to be performed on Mr. Demo on Monday in Lowville to determine the exact cause of death.

A Willow Street neighbor said the couple was known to enjoy camping and that, at one time, Mr. Demo had worked in Albany.

James Eaton, who lives in the same apartment house as the Demos, said the couple had resided in the front apartment “a long time” and that Mr. Demo had worked in Brushton.
