E'town-Lewis Chamber makes plans

ELIZABETHTOWN — The Elizabethtown-Lewis Chamber of Commerce is considering new initiatives that could include a foot race and trail cleanup.

At its annual meeting, held recently, chamber members discussed plans for the coming year.

Elizabethtown Town Supervisor Margaret Bartley mentioned several upcoming events that the chamber could promote, including an antique car show at the Adirondack History Museum on June 8; the local Leadville, Colo., qualifying race, which would come through the area on June 16; and Lewis Civil War Days on Sept. 27 and 28.

The chamber would also be assisting in Elizabethtown Days in July.

“This area is becoming a race area,” Bartley said.

“I’ve been in discussions with the Keene Chamber of Commerce to co-sponsor a race called the Hurricane Challenge, since we share that mountain.”

Essentially, the race teams would go up one side of Hurricane Mountain, place a flag at the top and then go down the other side.

Gail Testa provided information about Champlain Area Trails, including its annual event on June 1, which will include a hike and guest speaker.

It was suggested that a cleanup day be held for Elizabethtown’s Blueberry Trail.

It was also mentioned that ATVs have been going on a section that is off-limits, which could cause trail damage.

“Unfortunately, we don’t have a parks department (for cleanup), though some families have adopted trails,” Bartley added.

Members discussed providing a $300 scholarship to an Elizabethtown-Lewis Central School senior who would be pursuing post-high-school studies in the business field at a school in New York state.

Members talked about when to bestow the award — at graduation or at the subsequent chamber meeting, which wouldn’t be until August. There were concerns over the possibility the recipient might not be available at that time. No final decision was made.
