Bicyclist struck by vehicle dies

Hit on Route 9 north of Plattsburgh; name not available

PLATTSBURGH — A bicyclist was killed after he was struck by a car at the intersection Route 9 and North Bowl Lane at dusk Tuesday.

State Police would not release the name of the bicyclist Tuesday, but confirmed he was a male.

Shortly after the 5 p.m. accident, his body lay under a white blanket next to a Cumberland Head Fire Department ambulance. A bicycle was on its side in the road about a car length from Route 9 next to a dark-colored Honda. The area was ringed by a cordon of yellow State Police crime-scene tape.

Troopers and a Bureau of Criminal Investigation investigator were inspecting and photographing the hood and grill area of the car in the rapidly darkening and windy evening. It appeared the vehicle had just turned onto the road from Route 9 when the accident occurred.

Clinton County Coroner David Donah also responded to the crash.

Rush-hour traffic on Route 9 was directed by firefighters, backed up at times nearly to the Stewart’s Shop near the Interstate 87 Exit 38 intersection at Cumberland Head Corners. Cars leaving North Bowl Lanes and Cumberland 12 Cinemas, both accessed by North Bowl Lane, were sent through the abandoned North Country Shopping Center parking lot.

A Fire Department light truck lit up the area as the State Police collision team began to arrive.

Investigators continued their study of the evidence well into the evening.
