College students focus onSudan relief

PLATTSBURGH — The SUNY Plattsburgh chapter of Theta Nu Xi multicultural sorority and Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity are raising funds and awareness for the people of Southern Sudan.

Southern Sudan seceded from the north and gained its independence only a year ago last July because of the violence in the north in Darfur and because of political and religious differences with those in power in the north.

More than 2.5 million people have been killed and more than 5 million displaced, according to Southern Sudan Humanitarian, a non-profit group focused on providing emergency food relief and access to medical supplies and on improving education, water quality and the standard of living in Southern Sudan.

The local fraternity and sorority have sponsored fundraising events. To donate or for more information, contact Josephine Gonzalez at jgonz001@mail.plattsburgh.edu.
