Your Town: Schroon Lake

---- — SCHROON LAKE — Officials here plan to closely monitor all spending this year in hopes of keeping the town’s fund balance up and the tax levy down.

The measure was just one of many goals outlined by Town Supervisor Michael Marnell at the organizational meeting held earlier this year.

Marnell also hopes to find a buyer for the old firehouse and extend the ski-tow ski area at the Schroon Lake Golf Course by clearing additional trees.

The council noted the ski tow is up and running every weekend, weather permitting, this season at the Hoffman Road golf course.

Other action taken at the session include:

Meeting dates: Monthly Town Council meetings are held the second Monday of each month at 6 p.m. at the Town Hall unless otherwise advertised.

Mileage: Officials approved mileage rates for town employees at 4.45 cents per mile.

Clerk hours: Town Clerk Patty Savarie is now available from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Fireworks float: Officials hope to rent or purchase a float for future fireworks shows so the park won’t have to be fenced off to the public as it has been in the past.

Appointments: Officials approved several appointments, including: Chris Stone as budget officer; Patty Savarie, sewer and water tax collector; Roger Friedman, deputy supervisor; Roger Mahler, deputy highway superintendent; Richard Schoenstadt, chairman of Board of Assessors; and Tina Armstrong, youth coordinator.

Highway spending: The council authorized the Highway Department to purchase up to $1,000 worth of small tools and equipment without prior Town Council approval.

Transfer station: The Transfer Station hours are 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday through Tuesday (closed Wednesdays and Thursdays).

Legal holidays: Town employees don’t work these holidays: New Year’s Day, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Presidents’ Day, Good Friday, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Columbus Day, Election Day, Veterans’ Day, Thanksgiving Day and Friday after that holiday, and Christmas Day.
