Vt. man killed in Ellenburg accident

ELLENBURG — A Swanton, Vt., man was killed Tuesday morning in a two-car accident on Route 11 here.

Alan H. Winters, 73, died after a Toyota RAV4 driven by Barbara A. Garrison crossed into the westbound lane and struck his 2007 Ford Focus at about 7:45 a.m., according to a press release from State Police.

He was traveling east on Route 11; Garrison was headed west.

Winters was pronounced dead at the site of the accident by Clinton County Coroner David Donah.

An autopsy will be performed today at CVPH Medical Center in Plattsburgh to determine the cause of death, New York State Police Troop B Criminal Bureau of Investigation Capt. Robert LaFountain said.

Garrison, 60, also of Swanton, Vt., was taken to CVPH for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries, police said.

The accident took place near Northern Adirondack School but did not involve any students, LaFountain said.

Route 11 between Brandy Brook and Cold Spring roads was closed until about 12:30 p.m., with traffic detoured around the spot.

The Troop B Collision Reconstruction Unit and the Clinton County Sheriff’s Department are assisting with the investigation.

Ellenburg Center and Ellenburg Depot volunteer fire departments and EMS responded to the accident.

The cause of the crash was still under investigation Tuesday afternoon by State Police and Clinton County District Attorney Andrew Wylie’s office.
