---- — PLATTSBURGH — The Rockeater Adventure Race will challenge competitors with several new obstacles when runners set out on the course on Saturday, Sept. 21.
The 5K (3.1 mile) race, presented by the City of Plattsburgh Recreation Department, 99.9 the Buzz and PenAir, will start at the main swim area of Plattsburgh City Beach at 2 p.m. Waves of runners will start every 30 minutes.
The course will move along the beach, Heritage Trail, Scomotion Creek area and travel through the Crete Civic Center area.
The race will include more than a dozen obstacles on the course. Fan-favorites such as the harvest crawl, mud pit, tunnel crawl, scramble net, water wading and fire jumping will be included once again, a press release said.
Good spots for spectators to see many of the obstacles are in the area between the back of the Crete Civic Center and the main swim area of the beach.
The costume contest will return for a third year with prizes for the best entries. Event entertainment and music will be provided by 99.9 The Buzz throughout the race and after-race party.
Food, drinks, and vendors will be available for both participants and spectators.
A new addition for 2013 will be the “Pebble-eater” Adventure Race for children. Kids ages 4, 5 and 6 can run a shortened route (about ½ mile) at noon. Seven-, 8- and 9-year-olds can tackle a ¾ mile route at 12:30 p.m. (Parents can run with both those age groups).
And ages 10 through 14 can compete in a 1.5 mile loop at 1 p.m.
All routes incorporate age-appropriate obstacles and safety measures, the release said, and will finish in the crowd-favorite mud pit. All participants who preregister will receive a T-shirt and medal. Registration is $15 until Sept. 18 and $20 on race day.
“The addition of the ‘Pebble-Eater’ kids’ race is one we’ve been hoping to put on since the inaugural Rockeater, and now we are finally able to do it,” City Superintendent of Recreation Steve Peters said in the release.
“Watching kids go through portions of the course will be a lot of fun.”
Sponsorship proceeds will benefit CancerBGone, a local nonprofit group dedicated to supporting the Fitzpatrick Cancer Center at CVPH. All sponsorship inquiries and arrangements can be made through Patricia Diman at email@example.com.
Advance registration for the adult race, set at $35, can be made only at www.rockeateradventurerace.com and no later than Sept. 18.
Race-day registration will be available for $45. It will include participation in the race, bib number and after-party admission.
