PLATTSBURGH — A long planned Five Guys Burgers and Fries restaurant is finally under construction.
Work is underway on the former Mangia property on Route 3 in the Town of Plattsburgh.
The restaurant is being built by the Hada Group, based in the Albany area. Director of Operations Bill Rabbit said they hope to open sometime in early fall.
“We’re looking to open up sometime in October,” he said.
The approximately 2,300-square-foot restaurant is expected to seat about 60 people.
Rabbit said they are likely to hire 45 to 50 full- and part-time employees, including a manager and two or three assistant managers.
The Hada Group originally had City of Plattsburgh Planning Board approval to locate at the former Carsana’s location at the intersection of Cornelia and Broad streets. They backed away from that location due to concerns about below-ground contamination from a service station formerly located on the property.
That property has since been cleaned up, with the contamination removed.
They then turned to the former Mangia building and planned to construct a 1,200-foot addition to that structure to allow for inclusion of a TCBY yogurt shop. That plan was approved by the Town Planning Board in December 2012.
That month, Hada purchased the property from David White of the Albany-based White Management Group.
The plan changed due to an issue with access to the property and a State Department of Transportation right-of-way because of its proximity to the on-ramp to Interstate 87. Hada decided to demolish the Mangia building and put up a new structure.
Because the property would remain a restaurant and occupy the same footprint, Planning Board approval was no longer required.
Town Supervisor Bernie Bassett said he is excited to welcome Five Guys to the town at last. He said visitors to an area often look for franchises with which they are familiar, and Five Guys meets that criteria.
“We’re pleased that after a great deal of effort by all parties the project has the green light to go forward,” he said. “I’m sure they will do very well.”
Five Guys was founded in Arlington, Va, in 1986. The company began to offer franchises in 2003 and now has more than 1,000 locations in 47 states and six provinces in Canada.
The restaurants offer hamburgers, hot dogs, grilled cheese, BLTs, veggie sandwiches and french fries. The burgers are made with fresh, not frozen, ground beef; there are no freezers in the restaurants, according to website information.
Fifteen toppings are available at no extra charge, and free in-the-shell peanuts are served.
The chain states it offers more than 250,000 combinations.
The fries are cooked in pure peanut oil. All menu items are trans-fat free, the site says.
