River recedes; danger lingers

(Continued)

SAFETY CHECKS REQUIRED

On Jan. 23, a 4,000-foot-long ice jam started behind 181 Lower Park St. and caused the Salmon River to overflow, forcing evacuation of several homes.

As much as 4 feet of water filled cellars and threatened outdoor buildings.

A garage at 353 Lower Park was partially ripped off its foundation Thursday, and Town Code Enforcement Officer Robert Crossman may condemn that building and the home it is attached to, said Franklin County Emergency Services Director Ricky Provost.

He said residents wishing to return to their homes will have to coordinate with Crossman, who must conduct safety inspections before that can happen.
