AuSABLE FORKS — Looks like Family Dollar will set up here soon.
At a Town of Black Brook public hearing Monday, the Town Council gave unanimous approval to allow a sign for the business that would be 2 feet larger than permitted by the zoning law.
Then, said Town Supervisor Rick Nolan, Family Dollar contractor Lawrence Tillack asked for both demolition and building permits.
“He said he wanted to get started as soon as possible,”
The new store will be located, Nolan said, on the present site of the M&M Diner at the intersection of Route 9N and French Village Road in the part of the AuSable Forks hamlet located in the Town of Black Brook.
Owner Jay McDonald couldn’t be immediately reached for comment Tuesday evening, but he told the Press-Republican recently that if he sells the property to Family Dollar, he would reopen his eatery elsewhere in the community.
Ten members of the public attended the hearing, asking questions about how a Family Dollar store would affect traffic patterns, about how tractor-trailer delivery would work.
One person who lives close to the location wondered if the sign might create enough light pollution to affect his home at night.
“Just the typical stuff that would affect a small town,” Nolan said.
Family Dollar would receive big deliveries by tractor-trailer once a week and via box truck in between, he said.
Tillack fielded questions, as well.
“He had all the specs, a whole set of plans,” Nolan said, “what the parking lot would look like ...”
In all, the session lasted a quick 15 minutes, he added.
The residents there not only were fine with the sign measurements, he said, they were in favor of the store itself.
TOWN WATER MAIN
The only concern the Town Council had, Nolan said, was that a town water main runs through the area where the parking lot would be.
