CHAZY — The bridge over the Little Chazy River on Lakeshore Road in the Town of Chazy is closed for renovations.
During a recent Town Council meeting, County Legislator Sam Dyer reported work that was about to start.
The Clinton County Highway Department says the job is scheduled to be completed before Labor Day.
The closure results in a long detour for residents of the area just north of the bridge, which is located just south of Lapoint Road — to head south, they first have to drive northward to the intersection of Lakeshore Road in the hamlet of Coopersville then take Route 9B to Route 9.
Also at the meeting:
Insurance change: The council agreed to change the town’s insurance coverage from Selective Insurance through NBT Latremore to New York Municipal Insurance Reciprocal coverage from Northern Insuring for one year.
Town Councilor Jerry Deno said initial quotes from the Insurance Reciprocal showed an annual savings of about $10,000.
Selective later submitted a quote that was about the same, but the council decided to go with Insurance Reciprocal anyway, he said.
The policy, which covers the town from June 1 to May 31, 2014, totals $33,963.
Roof repair: The Town Council authorized Supervisor Staub Spiegel to advertise for bids for labor to repair the garage roof at Chazy Town Hall.
Deno said the town worker who normally would handle that has been busy building a new records-storage vault in the Town Hall, performing recreation-park and equipment maintenance and completing a sidewalk project.
Materials are to be provided by the town and have already been purchased, Deno said, so the councilors want to get the work done as soon as possible. The resolution states that all work must be paid at prevailing wages.
Basketball court: Town Councilor Richard West has agreed to repair the concrete slab on the basketball court at Chazy Recreation Park.
The councilors voted to provide $200 for materials.
Surplus equipment: Bids were opened for the sale of four pieces of surplus equipment.
Town Clerk Leo Oliver said the council is expected to decide which bids will be accepted at its next meeting, scheduled for 7 p.m. Monday, July 8.
Phones: In the Town Talk newsletter, it was reported that the new phone system at the Town Office is in operation. The main number remains 846-7544, with Ext. 1 for the Supervisor’s Office, 2 for the town clerk/tax collector, 3 for the town assessor, 4 for Town Court, 5 for the Codes and Zoning Office and 6 for the town historian.
The number for the Town Highway Department is 846-7130.
Permits: The newsletter also reported that new Town Codes and Zoning Officer Michael Tetreault is reminding people that building/demolition permits are required for most work by property owners in the town.
Permits are available at the Town Office, as are copies of the Zoning Law and zoning maps.
Permits and maps are also available at townofchazy.com.
Tetreault’s hours are 9 a.m. to noon Tuesdays and 1 to 4 p.m. Thursdays.
