Rain moves many Rouses Point July 4 events indoors

ROUSES POINT — Much of the Fourth of July Celebration here, scheduled to begin tonight, will be under cover in the Rouses Point Civic Center.

And many vendors will move to the parking lot and an adjacent strip of lawn.

“There’s about 4 inches of water down in the grass” where they usually set up, Fourth of July Committee Co-chair Beck Reid said Thursday. “Unfortunately, the park sits low.

Today’s events kick off at 4 p.m. with carnival rides, in the Civic Center parking lot as usual, along with games and other offerings. Food concessions will be under tents near the front of the Civic Center.

The Community Singers and Strawhatters concert band will perform inside from 6 to 7:30 p.m., with seating on the bleachers and picnic tables. The band Slab City plays from 8 p.m. to midnight, also indoors, as will other bands through the weekend. The Libations Tent will also move inside, as will Kid’s Day on Saturday.

The parade set for Sunday will go on rain or shine, Reid said, followed by fireworks at dusk.

Fishing free in New York this weekend

ALBANY — New York residents and visitors can fish for free without a fishing license in any state lakes, ponds or stream this Saturday and Sunday.

“This is the perfect time to introduce someone to the sport of fishing or invite a friend or relative from out of state to enjoy the great fishing the state has to offer,” State Department of Environmental Conservation Commissioner Joe Martens said in a press release.

The state’s Open for Hunting and Fishing initiative also includes the streamlining of hunting and fishing licensing and reducing fees, improved access for fishing at various sites across the state, stocking as much as 900,000 pounds of fish from DEC hatcheries and increasing hunting opportunities.

FYI...
  • Why do wolves howl?

Of all the myths that dog the wolf, none is more widely accepted than the idea that wolves howl at the moon. Images of wolves with their heads upturned, singing at the night sky, are as unquestioned as a goldfish's three-second memory or a dog's color-blindness (both also myths).
