25 YEARS AGO — 1987

▶ Local television channel WCFE-TV has applied for a license to operate an educational public radio station in the area.

▶ Naming the new $20 million bridge connecting Rouses Point and Vermont has become quite controversial. Veterans from both sides of the lake have launched campaigns with different names in mind — on the New York side they're shooting for "Veterans Memorial Bridge," while the Vermont veterans groups want to name the bridge "Korean Veterans Memorial Bridge."

50 YEARS AGO — 1962

▶ Elementary schools of the Champlain Central School system will be receiving encyclopedia sets from the Parent Teacher Association. Money for the books was raised from the recently held "Buck and a Book" dance.

▶ The construction of the new $2.2 million science building on the Plattsburgh State will potentially be beginning this summer. The T-shaped building will be located between Broad and Brinkerhoff and Beekman and Draper streets.

▶ Chazy Central Schools performance of "The Dear Departed" by Stanley Houghton won this year's Clinton County Interscholastic League one-act play competition. Champlain Central came in second place with their rendition of "The Death of the Hired Man" by Jay Reid Gould.

▶ Plattsburgh Air Force Base is now hooked up to a new Direct Inward Dialing telephone system. The new system cuts out having to talk to an operator and lets you dial directly to another phone.

75 YEARS AGO — 1937

▶ More than 200 pieces of property went up for sale at the Saranac Lake tax auction.

▶ Seven-year-old Edward Searsay, son of Mr. and Mrs. Stanley Searsay, was brought to the Champlain Valley Hospital after suffering some lacerations after running into the side of an automobile driven by Ernest Flynn of Plattsburgh.

▶ Sugar makers in the Malone area are happily anticipating this years run of sap. Nights have been ideal for a good harvest.
