Director: NY Empire Games likely a no-go

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. (AP) — The executive director of New York's Empire State Games says he expects them to be canceled this year due to lack of funding.

There's been no official state announcement. But director Fred Smith tells the Journal News: "The writing is pretty much on the wall."

Budget cuts have left the event without most of its $2.8 million funding.

The games have been scheduled for late July.

Smith has authorized regional directors to dismiss their local coaches. Hudson Valley did so on Saturday.

Smith said the 2010 Summer Games in Buffalo are still on. But even that funding remains a question mark.

New York will hold scaled back versions of the 2009 Empire State Senior Games, and Games for the Physically Challenged.
